With the purpose of comparing the marginal deterioration of amalgam filling, preventive
resin restoration and glass ionomer cement restoration, an experimental study was
performed by inducing the artificial caries around the margin of each restoration. 36
extracted human molars, free of restorations, severe caries, or other defects, used as
specimen were assigned randomly to three separate groups to the restorative treatment,
thermo-cycled, incubated in caries-inducing bath with 5.muttons, and processed for
histologic investigation under polarized microscope. The results obtained were as follows
1. The frequency of marginal leakage of preventive resin restoration group and glass
ionomer cement filling group was less than amalgam filling group with statistical
significance.
2. The outer lesion depth of glass ionomer cement filling group was less than
preventive resin restoration group and amalgam filling group with statistical significance.
3. In regards of anticariogenicity, it revealed that glass ionomer cement is superior to
other 2 materials.
